Educators may choose many online professional development opportunities With support from ODE, e-Read Ohio is providing a menu of courses developed specifically for teachers by Ohio educators. Course titles include Assess-Plan-Teach in Action (PreK-4), Differentiating Instruction for Diverse Student Needs (K-6), Early Language Learning (PreK-3), Developing Adolescents’ Content Vocabulary and Word Power (4-12) and Supporting the Adolescent Reader as Strategist (4-12). The online modules include expert commentary, research and strategies for classroom implementation. October 26: STEM Over Lunch Sponsored by: The Works, Licking County Educational Service Center, The Business and Community Advisory Council, the Licking County Chamber Manufacturer’s Council and The Port Authority. Contact Robin Galbari to register. 8:30 - 11:30 Inquiry-based instruction in the math and science classroom. Led by George Viebranz, Executive Director, Ohio Mathematics and Science Coalition. Each district is encouraged to bring a science teacher and a math teacher from the elementary and middle schools (up to 4 total) and any others with curriculum development related to STEM. 11:30 – 12:00 STEM at the Works. Led by Rori Preston and Jason Hillyer, Works Educators. 12:00 – 1:45 lunch and networking, Superintendents, Teachers, and manufacturers. The superintendent will join the teachers and sit, as a district, over lunch. Representatives of Licking County manufacturers will join the event.
The manufacturers will rotate from table to table every eight minutes and be encouraged to talk about how their operation deploys the use of STEM skills in their every day workplace. Manufacturers, where possible, will bring a sample of their work product, background material, and contact information.
The goal is that the teachers and superintendents have a chance to interact with eight different manufacturers and learn about eight different approaches to the use of STEM skills. 2-3:30pm—“The Science of Glass.” Teachers end their day by taking part in a special activity in The Works’ Glass Studio. In addition to learning about the science and math involved with glass and glass-blowing, participants will have the opportunity to hand-craft their own glass creation.
